Bali Travel
A significant part of your Bali adventure (& expense) will involve getting there and back.
As you look for flights to Bali’s airport in Denpasar (“DPS”) you want to consider not only cost, but total travel time.
I was pleasantly surprised when I booked my tickets on China Airlines (via Taipei) that my both trips would be less than 24 hours. For comparison purposes, my round-trip cost was less than $1,700. Though I became aware of my flights on Kayak (a travel site), I found the price was better directly from the China Airlines website. Another attendee found Cathay Pacific better suited her needs, but found that booking on the “affiliated” airlines (American) more user friendly.
More recently, I found a round trip on Eva Air for $1,543 through Tapie and the longer leg was less that 23 hours. GOOD FLIGHTS ARE STILL AVAILABLE!!!
If you experience similar successes in booking your flights, please let me know and I will include that information here for the benefit of our fellow yogis.
Nothing is that far away in Bali, but you probably don’t want to try to find it on your own. Taxis (official & other) are cheap and persistently available.
Going to Bali and saying you have seen Indonesia, is like going to Hawaii and saying you have seen the USA. You might want to keep your adventure simple and take a few extra days to explore Bali’s diverse micro climates and cultures.
For orientation purposes, it is important to know that Ubud (our retreat location) is NOT on the beach. So, if you want your trip to include beach time (before or after the retreat) there are many diverse options. Three of the more popular choices are (1) Kuta (cheap beer and drunk Ausies); (2) Seminyak (elegant & sophisticate at “full retail” pricing); (3) Sanur (more European & family oriented). In all beach destinations, you have the choice of going “rogue” in a hotel off the beach (for much less money) and scrambling to figure out where you want to chill out. Or, embracing one of the many appealing resorts on the beach (which pretty much have everything you want).
If you are looking to broaden your adventure, you might consider a flight to Java to see the sacred temples of Borobudur or checking out the less-developed island paradise of Lombok. I am in the process of finding a reliable local travel agent who might guide you in your adventures.
What limits people is that they don’t have the nerve or imagination to star in their own movie, let alone direct it.
